Social Media, Self Worth, & Financial Worth

At a risk of getting negative thoughts upon my writing I have recently realized how bad social media is tearing up anyone in its path. I have always been aware of cyber bullying, cyber terrorism, and the influx of media that can spread so far and wide ultimately bringing either positive energy or very negative. I find it interesting that you can spill your heart out and no one cares or even says a word, but you say something small and insignificant that someone else doesn’t like it becomes a blood bath.

In a recent discovery I am led to think about one popular form of social media that goes along the same lines of a show and a popular shopping site. Basically consists of social popularity tying in with worth whether financial or just social standing. On a show basis you do good things people vote up, you do something stupid your sent into a spiral of voting down which could lead to your death. When your actions are judged by anyone around you basically being on trial for your whole existence does not create better lifestyles, it can turn someone crazy who would have been fine any other circumstance, it could turn an honest mistake (human nature) into a death sentence, and it could mean being fake and not yourself just so you are not scrutinized for the rest of your life. We fight for equality and yet we are also destroying it and no one seems to notice.

You post on a social media site you can be liked, disliked, up voted, down voted, same thing. There could be a million pointless posts that get zero attention but if you inadvertently pick the wrong thing to make a comment on, your picked apart like road kill on the street with vicious words and attacks all in which were never called for, and that’s what our youth is subjected to. Now what happens when that becomes tied to financial worth, when your knocking others off the face just to get your worth increased, you become a player in a vicious game, basically like life depended on it. The apocalypse just happened and everyone floods the stores trampling others, pushing, shoving and harming each other for their own survival. Well that’s exactly what you are doing by tying a person’s worth to social standing.

Social media should be a tool, to learn from, to reach out from, and to teach from. Instead it’s an outlet for anyone to harm someone else, be bigger and appear tougher than in person. There is a fine line between having an online persona to get your voice heard, and just being as malicious as your swollen head gets. If you are missing facts when you are trying to talk to someone, rather than explode on them, help rather than defeat them. Not everyone has the same tools, not everyone has the obsession, or the time to spend days straight living on their devices rather than realizing there is still something called sunshine and fresh air.

If we really wanted to be equal, we aren’t looking in the right direction; we are only creating more directions left and right and never going forward. Just like politics, everyone is obsessed with going left or right and fighting each other for it but that only further proves why you can’t predict the future, and why a lot of the time we try, by the time we get there we are not flying cars and we haven’t explored new worlds, because our attention is too focused on how to pick at every little thing we can to complain about, rather than get along and work together to advance as humans, progress and go forward.

I am all about free speech, having a voice and having the ability to know right from wrong, but when does it get to be enough when one comment from someone can heat someone else up so strongly that everything goes to hell. How heated a conversation can get, how tied into emotions people can get over a couple words. Ever heard the expression, “brush your shoulders off”? Life won’t suddenly improve for anyone because they were able to smash someone’s opinion down, because they weren’t able to educate and provide a better answer rather than create something negative. Nothing ever gets better with negatives, so rather than create a problem by observing it, find a solution and make a step to create a positive around you. I started a blog to try and get others to think for themselves, I work hard and it shows, people who actually know me, know I’m a stand-up guy and I just want to express that the world until we can get our focus straight will just be the one place we have because we won’t get far away from this planet if we can’t even get along on this one. Someone once told me something quite far out there and a bit morbid but I’ll express it here…

They told me at the rate the world is going, the people wealthy and smart enough won’t be building underground to survive one day, no instead they will be the ones who take off and leave the planet leaving the depleted dying earth behind for us to basically become its own version of hell while they start over somewhere else. To me that could be taken many ways, what I simply choose to take from that statement is that if we don’t work together there is always someone out there willing to take advantage of it, we should be creating new beginnings and heal ourselves before we cripple ourselves permanently.

Something I have experienced just moving from a place about 24hrs drive from where I am now, in the same country, things still change drastically. Having grown up in an atmosphere where everyone came from every place it was normal to have friends from every part of the world, didn’t faze me. Move here and everything changed, walked up to a group of people that didn’t share my complexion and they looked at me like I was crazy, no matter where I went it seemed as though people were more in their own groups than as a whole, it was weird, I’ve never adjusted to this norm because I have nothing against anyone, I just find that it’s interesting going from place to place what cultural norms take place. Just goes to show another element of how our surroundings, our upbringing and our own interpretation of things can create such a difference across the world which keeps us divided.

Which leads me to say individualism is good, having our own unique ways is good, what we practice what we are accustomed to is good, but how we develop as a human race, one form of communication or another we should ultimately want to move forward, with less destructive traits and find a way to flourish and thrive into something more positive. I may not speak the words as correctly as they are placed upon my thoughts transcribed into words but I hope the message is clear. Let’s move forward, not left or right, progress as humans and let go of such negativity, we are here, our children are here, and until such time that we are not, we should make the most of it, find the best within ourselves and grow a little, let’s make the future realistic and not problematic, I want to be your neighbour, won’t you be mine?
