Here’s a question, here’s a thought…
With all the different ways to communicate to others or
simply aloud why non-physical barriers are still the one wall many cannot
overcome. We are all able to communicate one way or another thanks to
technology but what is really lacking is the understanding on the other side. It
can be in many different forms, as simple as how youth see the elderly,
majority tend to see them as an obstacle to push aside as it serves them little
purpose to communicate with. It used to be as each generation grew, dependence
on anyone older become less, now dependence has become renewed in other forms
but instead of being dependent on someone for lack of knowledge or ability, it’s
become a crutch to remove any ability to stand on your own.
There are rare occasions through upbringing or even
situations that lead to a young person becoming connected to an elder, being
respectful from an early age, or simply having a desire to learn from those
best knowing of information not always widely put on the internet. Like books,
they once were the only means of info, pushed out as an old medium; the elderly
are pushed out being not beneficial. No one seems to think they have a voice
too. Granted as age can mould a mind, it can also destroy it, making it harder
and harder for elders to put out information for us to understand. Might take a
bit longer to say their thoughts, and there lies the problem, anyone who has
the capacity to listen and understand is at the point in their life they don’t have
“time”, so anything that requires effort becomes a burden rather than the gift
it could be, for either side. Rather than thinking of how you’re rewarded,
think of how they are rewarded because someone took the time to listen.
This brings me to another point, how anyone with any form of
dysfunction, impairment or disability. They receive nearly the same treatment,
some may get taken care of depending on their level of difficulties in everyday
life but it also becomes artificial, either because they are paid to help or pressured
by a family member or organization to do so. There are the few who volunteer
which still can be separated by those who wanted the experience, and those who
wanted it solely for the credit. There is no gain without pain, and there are
many out there with stories no one will ever hear. Those unable to speak, those
who try and are ignored, or those who spent a lifetime spreading pain and
misery suddenly on the other side begging for help and nobody wants to hear it
for one reason or another.
Whether you young or old or somewhere in-between, we go
through stages and natural movement occurs. Our communication develops through
our ages much like our personality, and although we do not always have the best
outlet, and quite possibly find the wrong path due to lack of guidance or
know-how to do otherwise, we are still just trying to be heard. Our capacity as
people can either help people or even hurt people, sometimes with intent and
sometimes by accident.
Communication has barriers that create problems in
everything right down to how a person succeeds in everyday life. Going for that
scholarship and being the smartest kid in the room but terrible at grammar and
does not get recognized. Going for that interview and even though you would do
amazing things at that job, you can’t seem to get the right words out. We all
are brought through different paths that could also lead to creating new ways
to handle barriers in communication, over time we grow out of uncertainties and
become more confident, as confidence grows so do our strengths in
communication, we find ways to pass those existing walls, only to find new
ones.
Challenges we face in every element of life and
communication is only one of them, it only takes one person along the way to
give you the tools to create a new way to conquer those challenges, you can
spend years fighting when the right path was never there because you were too
busy digging a hole into a comfort zone so big you never took a chance to move
forward. Sometimes it isn’t your communication ability that helps you
communicate, but someone else’s recognition of you that helps create a new
foundation. Even so, your own abilities could be the very reason someone else
is able to communicate.
There are so many ongoing advancements in the world that
have helped with many barriers for someone in their lives, whether it be
communication or handle everyday tasks, barriers such as someone who can’t
speak for themselves, see for themselves, hear for themselves. Well they
invented a variety of devices to help you cope with those, and it has made a
major impact. Communication, it is one of those things where you definitely
miss it when it is gone but seems to always take it for granted. Had a bad day?
You choose not to talk for hours or days even, because you can. Got into a
fight with someone said some things you shouldn’t have, or maybe you said
something that needed to be said, point is you were able to.
Anyone who teaches, or has a wealth of knowledge in various
subjects, becomes very vital that they are able to communicate, because without
being able to communicate, information is not transferable. That being said,
that person could be great at explaining detail to a various group of people,
but as it goes, one person might take from it different then another, one
person might grasp it quicker than another. Communication has many different
forms, stages and interpretations; it has to be adaptable in order to be accepted
in different places, around different people, in different forms of media.
We all have personal barriers, but as a whole, we should be
a community, to communicate to our strengths to dissolve our weaknesses and
create growth in the world for our development in creating new ways to
communicate without barriers. We are only divided by the barriers we ultimately
control, and we can help others be welcome as they are people too. Rather than
push them out for simple convenience, realize we will one day become them, and
ask the same questions with no reply, no one hearing them or caring they are
there.
Another cycle of life, possibly just human nature, but since
human nature has developed and changed through the years, why isn’t it possible
to reform what we all define is just being human, and be better humans. Not as
genetically reformed versions of what people used to be, rewriting genetics may
make us different, it will inevitably change what we are used to as humans are,
it might even disrupt those who remain traditional. There is no limit on
development until we define it. Who knows if it will be right or wrong, interpretation
and debate ultimately follows. We all think differently with like-minded
thoughts. We create barriers, as a safety net of some kind, and as long as we
remain afraid to communicate, we won’t surpass our past and remain hardly in
the future.
